Dwayne Haskins: Probe Continues Into Steelers Quarterback's Death

Police continue to investigate the tragic death of Dwayne Haskins, a Steelers reserve quarterback and former first-round NFL draft choice.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The time: 6:40 a.m. on Saturday. The place: the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 in Broward County, Florida. The incident: Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins attempted to cross the highway on foot and was struck by a dump truck.

Haskins, 24, died at the scene.

The Florida Highway Patrol is trying to piece together how such a tragic and avoidable moment occurred. A final report could take as long as 120 days to be issued, the Miami Herald reported.

NBC 6 South Florida spoke to a man who believes he saw Haskins on the interstate minutes before the fatality. Chris Stanley told the TV station he saw a man appearing to drift onto the highway on foot and was so concerned he called 911.

Stanley did not observe a vehicle that Haskins could have been driving prior to the accident.

Haskins was in Florida to train with fellow Steelers such as new quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, star running back Najee Harris and others.

After a stellar career at Ohio State, Haskins was a first-round draft choice of the Washington Commanders in 2019. He played for two seasons before the team released him and signed with the Steelers in 2021. He did not play a regular-season game with the Steelers.

Tributes to Haskins poured in on social media, including one from recently retired Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

"He came to work everyday with a smile on his face and energy and love in his heart," Roethlisberger stated. in the letter he shared on social media. "I really enjoyed his passion

and love for the game and wanting to learn and be the best. His smile and zeal for life will be missed!

"Wish we had more time together on this earth, but I will cherish the time and the laughs we had! I'll say it again just like I told you to your face, I still wish I could throw the ball like you!! Love ya pal."

Haskins is survived by his wife, Kalabrya, his parents, Dwayne and Tamara Haskins, and a sister, Tamia.
